The Last Post

It's 12:06 AM, September 13, 2003. I should be sleeping. Instead, I'm trying to set up this online journal. We're leaving for France tomorrow morning. Technically speaking we're leaving this morning. In less than 12 hours. I definitely ought to get some sleep.

God I was tired this morning. Gina was right. Again. I didn't think I'd live through the day.

Damien dropped us at Gare de l'est at 10 PM. He stayed till departure -- 11 PM. Thanks, Damien! You saved our lives! The girls slept in the car ride to the station. We had to wake them to get on the train.

The highlight today was a visit to the park.

{Communication problems have prevented more frequent postings. Schnapps and typing don't mix. But leaving the modem cable in the last country you visited means you can keep up with the schnapps and not worry about it.}

Gina's mother, Bianca, arrived from Spain last night. How nice it was to have her with us.

The dollar has been slipping against the euro. Our limited funds have become more limited with each passing day. It was time to find a job and make some money. But what? I don't speak German. I'm not a EU citizen. Manual labor was my only option. But I had to get paid under the table.

I woke this morning with the heavy feeling that after travelling thousands of miles across the world, all we're doing is drinking and eating. Which explains that heavy feeling. But nonetheless, it brings me great joy because finally a vacation is working out as planned.

Something happened on our first night in Germany that I forgot to mention. (You can blame my faulty memory on too much schnapps.) So I'll spare the details of the spectacular lunch we enjoyed today at the home of Katrin.

We returned to the München Hauptbahnhof this morning, courtesy of the good Mr. Ingo Zeller and his sleek Alfa Romeo, packed and ready for a full day by train to Budapest, Hungary. Magyarország, as they say in the land of goulash, paprika, and salami.

I rose early because Eva was up, and together we caught a Budapest sunrise. When Marta woke I watched her boil raw milk, and we then shared a delicious pot of tea. Later in the day we visited my Grandmother's (her mother's) grave, to tidy it up and place fresh flowers. She showed me the historic cemetary.

Today we visited Veronka and her boyfriend Peter.

A day in Szentendre and an evening of pastries.
